General Information

Numbers of passengers

Silver Halo is a 7.9m Cheetah Catamaran. The open fishing deck is 3.5m long by 2.6m wide and she can carry a total of 8 people including crew (we normally operate with just 1 or 2 crew) this makes it perfect for smaller groups of up to 6 passengers. Groups of friends or families are able to charter the complete boat with skipper, all to themselves…..perfect for your tailor made trips.

Sometimes a little bit of extra space can really improve the fishing experience, especially on the inshore trips where we are casting lures and soft plastics around the kelp and rocky gullies. For most fishing trips it can be better to take smaller groups with maybe just 3 or 4 anglers. I’m happy to take even smaller groups if clients have the budget!

Various options, distances and durations are available. We encourage chartering the ‘Complete Boat’ but do offer ‘Per Head’ bookings aswell. When booking ‘Per Head’ a minimum of 6 are required before trip can take place. I’m more than happy to take smaller groups but the ‘Complete Boat’ cost should be met.

If you are an individual or in a small group and cannot afford the ‘Complete Boat’ cost, we will try to find extra passengers to make the trip happen. Please see the ‘Pricing Page’ for all the options.

Fishing

Rest assured, my clients are my top priority and I will do all I can to provide a great day out for everyone and of course, try and find the fish!

Obviously, I’m a really keen angler myself and don’t need much of an excuse to get my own line in the water! If there is space and if clients are agreeable I will spend a bit of time fishing alongside you. I’m also happy to advise and share knowledge.

Whilst wrecking we often use lead headed type lures which require no need for a boom. This allows us to fish pretty light and get some great sport. On smaller tides and slacker water we also do a lot of slow pitch jigging, again the idea is to keep things as light as possible.

When fishing closer inshore we switch to lighter lures, jigs and soft plastics and cast them from the boat. Here we search around the rough ground, structure and kelp beds looking for wrasse, pollack, gurnard and bass. This is a great option to wrecking as we often have a little more shelter and some of the inaccessible scenery is amazing.

Mackerel fishing takes place closer to home and around Torbay. We have some great gear available free of charge, Sonik 4 rods and Penn Warfare reels are used and they also double up as more traditional wrecking rods.

Tackle usage, loses and breakages

Many clients like to bring their own tackle but I do have several good, mid range, rods and reels onboard. These are freely available for use all day long at no extra charge.

I’m really happy to be sponsored by Major Craft UK and will also have several of their great lure and jigging rods onboard. On the more specialised trips clients are welcome to try them out. More on this soon!

My own personal jigging and lure set ups can also be hired for the day at a small additional cost. Please enquire about this option.

Onboard, I will have various jigs, lures and soft plastics available for sale. Much of my slow jigging stock comes from Terry at Jigabite who has a real wealth of knowledge as well as a great online shop.

Please note: any damage, loses or breakages of any tackle etc must be paid for.

Pickup points

Silver Halo is berthed on a pontoon in Torquay’s outer harbour. Please see the google maps link, the postcode for the pick up point, which is on the main passenger ferry boarding pontoon at TQ1 2BJ

It is a simple walk on, walk off set up with parking close by. The best place to park is the upper level of carpark directly behind the Harbour Masters office on Beacon Quay.

We will usually meet clients at the pontoon 15 minutes before departure, please make sure you arrive approx 20 minutes before departure.

We are happy to have wheel chair access. Please let us know in advance if this, or anything else is required.

What to bring

Please travel light and bring only what you need, the more space we have onboard the better. We recommend 1 small rucksack and tackle box.

Be aware that weather conditions can change quickly at sea so it can be a good idea to layer up to stay warm.

Here are some suggestions on what to bring on  a typical charter:

  • food, water, flask of hot drink
  • sun cream, protective clothing, sun hat and sunglasses – which are a must all year around!
  • wet weather gear, hat, gloves
  • sea sickness tablets and any medication you may require
  • your favourite rod, reel and whatever tackle suitable for the type of fishing we are doing

I have 10 adult and 3 children’s ‘self inflating’ life jackets onboard, various rod and reel combos are available for use and a small amount of jigs and lures are usually for sale.

If you have any queries please get in touch.

Bookings, deposits and payments

In an ideal world sea fishing trips would be determined by the height and size of the tide, but as the weather is so unpredictable we will simply travel out whenever the weather allows us too, 7 days a week! When choosing your trip date feel free to look at tide sizes as a reference but please be aware that it is always the weather that has the final say! Normally as a bit of a guide, the bigger and increasing tides are better for lure fishing, wrecking, bass and pollack and the smaller tides are better for slow jigging, fishing in the kelp over the rough ground and for cod and ling. As previously mentioned, I will be running trips all week long and whenever the conditions allow…….not just pre-selected dates!

When making a booking please go to the Pricing page and choose your type of charter. Then fill out the booking form, if a date or time is already booked you will not be able to choose it. If you have any questions please get in touch.

To make a booking a 50 % deposit is required. Please bring cash on the day to pay the remainder.

If the trip is cancelled by the skipper for any reason then we will try to reschedule as soon as possible. Failing that, a full refund will be available. We will not be held responsible for any other loses incurred, for example, holiday accommodation or travel costs.

Cancellations by clients must be at least 7 days ahead of the scheduled charter date and via email or the deposit will be lost.

The return of deposits is at our discretion.
